Barreto Studio Workshop is centered on understanding how a space truly works beyond what is immediately visible. It explores the relationship between layout, materials, light, and the way people experience a place.

Every space has an essence. It is defined by its proportions, its flow, and the atmosphere it creates. Before thinking about decoration, it is important to understand the structure of the space, how it is used, and how it should feel.

This workshop focuses on developing that awareness. Learning to read a space, to recognize its potential, and to make intentional design decisions that enhance its character rather than compete with it.

Because good design is not about adding elements. It is about understanding what the space needs, and bringing it to life with clarity and purpose.

The Experience Behind the Design

At Barreto Studio Workshop, design is not only something you observe, it is something you create.

Each session is built around a hands-on experience where participants explore design through materials, textures, and personal expression. One of the activities invites you to paint a sculptural planter shaped like a human form, transforming it into a piece that reflects your own perspective, emotions, and identity.

This exercise is not just about decoration. It is about understanding that, just like people and plants, spaces also have a presence. They respond to how they are treated, how they are composed, and how they are lived.

By giving personality to an object, you begin to understand how design carries meaning. How intention shapes atmosphere. And how every space, when approached with awareness, can feel alive.

Because spaces are not empty. They hold energy, memory, and emotion. And learning to read them is the first step to designing with purpose.

How We Read a Space

Before making any design decision, the first step is learning how to read a space.

It is not only about what you see, but about how the space behaves. Every space has a natural flow, defined by circulation, proportions, and the way light moves throughout the day. Understanding this allows you to work with the space, not against it.

Reading a space means identifying its rhythm. Where people are drawn to, where they pause, and how they move. It is about recognizing what should be emphasized and what should remain quiet.

Light plays a fundamental role. Natural light reveals the true character of a space, while artificial lighting shapes how it is experienced. Observing how light enters, reflects, and transforms surfaces helps define the atmosphere you want to create.

In this workshop, you learn to slow down and observe. To understand before adding. To see beyond the obvious.

Because once you know how to read a space, every design decision becomes clearer, more intentional, and more meaningful.

Design as a Sensory Experience

Design is not only visual. It is something you feel.

A well-designed space engages the senses in subtle but powerful ways. It is not about adding more, but about understanding how each element contributes to the overall experience.

What shapes the experience of a space?

  • Materials

Natural materials like linen, wood, and stone bring depth and authenticity. They absorb light differently and create a richer, more layered environment.

  • Texture

Texture adds dimension. Soft fabrics, raw surfaces, and smooth finishes create contrast and make a space feel complete.

  • Light

Light defines atmosphere. Soft, warm lighting creates calm and intimacy, while brighter, cooler tones bring energy and focus.

  • Touch

A space should feel as good as it looks. Comfort, softness, and balance invite you to stay and connect with the environment.

  • Negative space

What you leave out matters. Empty space allows the mind to rest and gives importance to what remains.

Why it matters

When design is approached through the senses, the result goes beyond aesthetics. The space begins to feel intentional, balanced, and emotionally connected.

Because a well-designed space is not only seen. It is experienced.

Hands-On Design

Design is not only understood. It is experienced.

At Barreto Studio Workshop, learning happens through doing. Each session includes a hands-on activity that allows you to explore design in a more intuitive and personal way.

  • Create a meaningful design object

Each session includes a hands-on activity where participants create and personalize a piece. It can be a sculptural planter, a picture frame, a candle, or other design elements.

  • Express through design

Color, texture, and composition become tools to reflect personality, emotion, and intention.

  • Work with materials

The process encourages a deeper connection with textures, finishes, and form.

  • A curated and social experience

Depending on the group, sessions can be accompanied by coffee, tea, or wine.

The idea is to enjoy a relaxed and creative moment, spending time together while learning something new that can be applied to your own space.
